Gloria M. "Cokie" Halter, 90 of Mountville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Hamilton Arms. She was the wife of the late Joseph Willis Halter with whom she was married 69 years until his passing on March 25, 2022. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie William Barninger.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1951, Gloria was employed for many years as an administrative assistant for various local insurance agencies. She was an active and devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Columbia, where she participated in the church choir, lectured, served on church council, taught Sunday School for 20 years and volunteered for the Columbia Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed crafts, bowling, playing the organ cooking, baking and reading.

She is survived by her sons, Douglas Halter companion of Linda Reidenbaugh; Dr. Michael Halter husband of Linda; Chris Halter; ten grandchildren, Megan, McGwire, Sarah, Hannah, Ryan, Nathan, Laura Beth, Holly, Joshua, Jason; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The last of her immediate family she was preceded in death by her son Joseph W. Halter, Jr. and siblings, Vernon, Charles, Arthur, Richard, Melvin, Nelson, Beatrice, Agnes, Rebecca, Catherine and Joanne.

Funeral services will be held from St. John's Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Whitesel, officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. Family and friends may view at the church one-hour prior to the service.

Barry L. Herchelroath, 79, a lifelong Columbia resident, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at his residence. He was the husband of Pamela Droege Herchelroath with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage this past August 4th.  Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary Smith Herchelroath.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1962, Barry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army PA National Guard for 22 years before retiring as First SGT. In addition, he was employed for over 40 years as a production worker at Armstrong World Industries, retiring in 1999.

Barry was a skilled pool player having played in multiple local Columbia and Lancaster County pool leagues. He was a member of the Hambones Social Club; American Legion Post #372; L.O.O.M Lodge #307; C.W.V Post #1307; B.P.O.E #1074; Wrightsville Fish & Game; and the Mt. Prospect Rod & Gun Club.

In addition to his wife are his children, James W., husband of Krista (Smith) Herchelroath; and Krista A. Ness; granddaughters, Madison Combs (Jason); Katie Ness (Blaine Benfer); Erin Miller (Montana); Paige Herchelroath; and Jordan Musser (Tyreese); great-grandchildren, Noah, Sophia, and Evelyn; and his sister Jane Kelec. He was preceded in death by his sister Alice Bartch.

Colby Jordon Lyle, 35, of Dover passed away on February 24, 2024 following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Columbia to Steve and Lisa Lyle and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Colby attended and graduated from Eastern York High School. He was working as an electrician’s apprentice with Ascom Electric where he appreciated working with all of his coworkers. Colby was known to be a strong and humble man who enjoyed coin collecting and shooting with his father and brother. Colby was a loving companion, father, son, and brother who adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Colby leaves behind his companion of sixteen years, Abby Sheppard of Dover; his beloved, daughter Remi Rose Lyle of Dover; his parents, Steve and Lisa Lyle of Dover; his brother, Jared Lyle of Cape Canaveral, FL; a large extended family and many friends.

Susan C. Kupsch, 67, of Marietta, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at Penn Medicine LGH. Born in Milwaukee, WI, she was the daughter of the late Donald R. Kupsch and Darlene Olson Kupsch Kurz.

Known as Susie to her family and friends, she graduated from James Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii and attended Mary, Mother of the Church, Mount Joy. She retired in 2022 after 25 years of service as a skilled production worker at Berk-Tek, a Leviton Manufacturing Company, New Holland. Artistic by nature, Susie was a talented jewelry maker and Scrimshaw artist using powder horns as her art media. She enjoyed antiquing, thrift shopping and all things Tina Turner.

Her biggest joys in life were her family and friends, and her generosity to others was well known and greatly appreciated. She enjoyed frequent trips to Stockbridge, WI and spending time at her grandparents' cottage on Lake Winnebago.

Susie is survived by her loving sisters, Christine K. wife of Kevin Emenheiser; Laura B. Dissinger; brother, Scott W. Kurz; step father, George Kurz; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Cox, Wendy Regan, Kyle Kurz, Cory Kurz, Kate Wasonoredjo, Eric Dissinger; many great nieces and nephews and close friends, Paul Barber and Phuong Adams. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Karl Kurz, Nancy Kurz and Patricia Vollmer.

MGySgt James Paul Welsh, Sr. USMC (ret), 64, of Manchester passed away on February 3, 2024. He was born in Long Island, NY to the late Capt. Ronald R. Welsh, Sr. and Shirley Wagasky Welsh. Known as Jim to those who knew him, he was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1977.

Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for twenty-five years. He enlisted in 1985 and did his basic training at Parris Island, SC. During his time of service, he had tours of duty in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Freedom and was awarded numerous decorations and awards for his valor. Jim retired from the Marines in 2008 with his last place of duty being MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA. Jim was an avid golfer and enjoyed the game every chance he could. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Jim leaves behind his wife of almost forty-five years, Connie Welsh of Manchester; two children, James, Jr., husband of Jen Welsh of Glenville, NY and Leah, wife of Keith Russell of Manchester; five grandchildren, Julia, Ethan, Reese, Landon, and Scarlett; four siblings, Rhonda, wife of Mike Spickler of Columbia, CWO4 Ronald Welsh, USMC (ret), husband of Sherree Welsh of Jacksonville, NC, Kathy, wife of Don DeClementi of Columbia, Debra, wife of Edgar Ohrel of Columbia; numerous nieces and nephews.

Linda M. Dosch, 76 formerly of Wrightsville, passed away on Friday, January 26,2024 at Inners Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had resided for the past three years. She was the wife of the late Ronald L. "Rat" Dosch with whom she was married 50 years until his death in 2017. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Agnes Mull Markel.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1965, Linda was employed for many years as a seamstress at Danskin. An ardent sports enthusiast, she had coached girls youth softball in Wrightsville and was a passionate Phillies fan with Mike Schmidt being her favorite player. Linda enjoyed bowling, reading, cross stitching, crocheting as well as listening to Elvis and Garth Brooks music.

She leaves behind her daughters, Christine, wife of Joe Brate; Michelle, wife of Chuck Prowell; grandchildren, Amanda, wife of R.J Stoutzenberger, Abby Brate, Brady Prowell, Dawson Prowell; great-grandsons, Cameron Kohler & Emory Stoutzenberger; sisters, Annie Craul and Paula, wife of Guy Kleckner. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Dave Markel and Cindy Wilhelm.

A Hempfield High School graduate, Class of 1968, Keith retired in 2000 from the Ford Motor Company working at local dealerships after 32 years of service as a parts manager. He was a member of the Community Fellowship Church, the L.O.O.M Lodge 307 and the F &Am Lodge 43. Keith was a lifelong custom car enthusiast and was active in the Vagabonds Car Club and was an avid Philly sports fan.

In addition to his wife Barb, he is survived by his daughter, Lisa Sheffer; son, Eric husband of Megan Sheffer; stepson, Michael Smith; stepdaughter, Malory Smith; grandchildren, Emmitt, Piper and Aiden; brothers, Jeff husband of Jean Sheffer and Gordon Sheffer. He was preceded in death by his brother P. Charles Sheffer.

She worked at Amp for almost 14 years before working at M&M/Mars until her retirement. Patricia enjoyed visiting her cabin in Cambria County as well as cooking, baking, arts and crafts, and movies. She truly was the most hospitable friend to all. Pat was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who adored her family and treasured spending time with them.  

Patricia leaves behind her husband of forty-eight years Dennis "Denny" Williams of Mount Joy; two children, Troy Williams of Manheim, Mindy, wife of Kerry Lapp of Intercourse; two grandchildren, Dalton and Taylor Lapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Hokie.

Susan Eman Berntheizel, 87, passed away January 14, 2024, at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by her family, following a brief illness.

Born in Lancaster, Susan was the daughter of the late Julia Taylor Eman and J. Harry Eman. Susan was married to the late George Y. Berntheizel for 46 years. She was the sister of the late Linda Swift, her sidekick for many adventures.

Susan and George enjoyed traveling with friends and family on cruises, visiting the New Jersey beaches, and boating on the Susquehanna River. Susan was very active and enjoyed swimming, walking, and competing in the football throw at the PA Senior Games. A lifetime nature and animal lover, Susan loved the house she and George built in the woods and delighted in the woodland creatures that surrounded their home. She also dearly loved and spoiled many dogs and cats who were lucky enough to be in her care.

Susan was a proud graduate of the J.P. McCaskey High School Class of 1954, where she made lifelong friendships.

Susan graduated from the Lancaster School of Business, but was an educator at heart. "Mrs. B." to her students, Susan worked at Park Elementary School with the Title One Program tutoring students. She spent many years with I.U. 13 in several school districts, coming full circle when she retired from J.P. McCaskey High School. She shared her love of books, literature, grammar and spelling with students.

Throughout her career, Susan became friends with many folks in education. She enjoyed getting together with her "Title One Crew," friends of forty-plus years, to play games, laugh and talk. She also kept in touch with many dear friends from I.U. 13.

As a retiree, Susan volunteered as a reader for the Lancaster Blind Association. She also volunteered for many years doing clerical work for the Lancaster Bureaus of Police and Fire. She really enjoyed and supported her "fuzzy, furry friends," the Lancaster police dogs and mounted police horses.

After downsizing to an apartment at Woodcrest Villa Retirement Community, Susan enjoyed meeting new neighbors and making new friends. The kindness extended by the Pheasant Point neighbors and friends at Woodcrest as well as the professional staff at the Mennonite Home was much appreciated during her illness.

Susan was always game for any social occasion, whether it be a school play, family get-together, game night, or meal out at a favorite restaurant. She loved to chat and always kept everyone updated on the latest celebrity gossip, as she rarely missed an issue of People Magazine. She was a prolific reader and kept lists of interesting words, phrases and names she came across - British slang was a particular favorite. Susan was also a gifted crafter - she sewed clothes and costumes for her children, and completed elaborate counted cross-stitch projects for her family. She also took great pride in writing irreverent poems for her family's birthdays.

Sharply intelligent, fun, creative and supportive, Susan was a wonderful mother to her children, Jedd Berntheizel and Matthew Berntheizel of Columbia, and Julie E. Berntheizel Caldwell and husband James Caldwell of Conestoga. She was the best and most fun Nana to Molly and Chris Hamlin of Lancaster and Sarah and Kyle Mongeau of Columbia. Susan was Super Nana (when just plain Nana wouldn't suffice) to Patrick and Charlotte Mongeau, her "icing on the cake" great grandchildren. She was a loving Aunt to Allison Swift, Miguel Lopez and Olivia Lopez of Lancaster, as well as other scattered nieces and nephews. This feisty, courageous, lovely woman will be missed by all who knew and loved her!

Susan attended Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. To honor her life, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA February 10, 2024. Delvin Lee Bruce, 82, of Columbia passed away on January 14, 2024. He was born in Alma, MI to the late Rev. G. Leroy and Bernice Bruce.

Del was a graduate of Alma High School with the Class of 1959. He attended Northwood College on a basketball scholarship and earned his associates degree in business. During his younger years he was a member of a touring gospel quartet, the Crystalaires. His favorite memories were when he spent the summers at his grandparents farm in Bellaire, MI. Del was the co-owner, along with Diane Kane, of the former Emerson’s Pub in Columbia. He was a youth basketball coach for many years and his former pub sponsored many golf tournaments, league teams, and fundraising events for various charities.

Del leaves behind his three daughters, Robbin Bruce-Quinn of Salunga, Keri Bemiller of Mount Joy, Kris, wife of John McFalls of Whigham, GA; six grandchildren, Michael, Devin, Travis, Carli, Michaela, and Chloe; five great grandchildren, Madison, Andrew, Marley, Saylor, and Killian; a sister, Madge Oeder and two nieces, Bridgett and Kendra of Bellaire, MI. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Vangie Little and a grandson, Zac Phelps.

Jean K. Crist, 100 of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at St. Anne's Retirement Community where she had resided for the past year. She was the wife of the late Edward N. "Ned" Crist with whom she was married 52 years until his death in 1997.

A graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1940, she was a lifelong member of the Columbia U.M. Church. Jean volunteered for various local organizations including the Columbia Meals on Wheels. She was active well into her nineties playing tennis, swim aerobics and participating in many of the activities in her community at St. Anne's.

Jean's family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff at St. Anne's for the excellent care afforded to her this past year.

Surviving are her daughters, Patricia C. wife of the late Gerald Beck; Kay L. wife of Charles "Chip" Beaston; Terry J. wife of the late Willam H. Hougendobler; six grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter H. Keiper.

Funeral services will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Grubbs, officiating. Interment in Silver Spring Cemetery. Family and friends may view one hour prior to the service. Charles W. Winders, Jr., 55, of Marietta, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on January 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma.

Charlie, known to many as Chuck, was born on February 7, 1968, to the late Charles W. Winders, Sr. and the late Eleanor (Pilosi) Winders in Norristown, PA. He was a 1987 graduate of Donegal High School who went on to study Electrical at ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors). He dedicated thirty-three and half years working for Lapp Electrical Services as a Project Manager. He then worked for a brief time at Mennonite Homes as a project manager of capital projects.  He was an extremely hard worker who was exceptional at his job.  He went above and beyond for his coworkers and customers, making him well-known and well liked. 

In 1986, Charlie met Lori (Markley) through mutual friends. They were high school sweethearts who went on to marry in March 1990 and celebrated 33 years of Marriage this past year.  Charlie and Lori shared an everlasting true love.  They had a very special relationship and did everything together. They very much enjoyed taking family vacations and spending special time together at their condo in Atlantic City, NJ.  Charlie was a devoted husband and family man. He and Lori went on to have 5 children; Kristina Rettew, wife of Steven M Rettew, of Maytown; Stephanie Winders, fiance of Bryce Rhoads, of Columbia; Lauren Mogey, wife of Thomas Mogey, of Fort Belvoir, VA; Rachel Winders of Hershey, PA; and C. William Winders, III still at home.  Together, they have 7 grandchildren: Aubriana, Bentley, Colton, Lillia, Josephine, Maverick, and Sophia. He was the most amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. To know him was to know that his family was everything to him. He spent much of his time with family and was very involved with his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind a huge void and will be eternally missed by many.  

Charlie was a member of the Marietta Lions Club and Columbia United Methodist Church for many years. He was a God loving Christian man who helped anyone and anywhere he could. He enjoyed bowling for many years with his father, and watching his children bowl, at the Columbia Bowling Alley. Charlie was a talker and knew many people; anywhere he went, he was sure to bump into someone he knew. He just had a special way about him that made him easy to talk to and connect with. He had a sarcastic sense of humor and always made those around him smile. 

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his sister, Daphne Warner. He is survived by his sisters Colleen Rentz, wife of Timothy Rentz, of Hollidaysburg, PA; and Robin Flinchbaugh, wife of Paul Flinchbaugh, of Wrightsville, PA. He has many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family who have both met him in Heaven and whom he leaves behind here on Earth. He was extremely loved by his family and made a lasting impact on those around him. 

Funeral services will be held at the Columbia U.M. Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia PA 17512 on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tom Grubbs, officiating. Gloria J. Conant 82, of Lancaster, PA, went to be with her Lord on January 13, 2024 surrounded by family. Born in Edwards NY, she was the daughter of the late Charlie E.  Coloney and Dorothy V. Averill Coloney of Edwards NY. Gloria was a professed Christian and had attended Columbia Christian Fellowship and Breakout Ministries.

She graduated from Edwards Highschool in Edwards, NY. She was nominated for the Queen of the Gouverneur County Fair during her graduating year in 1959.

She retired from Turkey Hill Minute Market Offices. During her life, she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, knitting, and made various other crafts. Her passion was for crochet in which she made numerous commodities for family and friends.

She is predeceased in death by her late husband Harvey H. Conant and siblings Carol A. Mcclung, wife of the late Robert Mcclung, a brother, David M. Coloney, a nephew, Nathan Mcclung , son in law John "Ray" Kauffman, and a great grandchild Kolby R. Warfel. She is survived by siblings Charles E Coloney, husband of Joanne Gibbs Coloney of Watertown, NY and Barbara J Stewert of Schenectady, NY. She is also survived by her children, Harvey H Conant "Sonny", husband of Donna Bianca Conant of York, Chriss A Conant, husband of Lori Graham Conant of Elizabethtown, Dawn M Kauffman wife of the late John "Ray " Kauffman of Washington Boro, Dianne L. Peters of Washington Boro, Deborah J. Fry, wife of Mathew S. Fry of York and Melanie J. Parmer, wife of Grant M. Parmer of Cooper, ME. 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and her beloved cat, Bell Jenkins of Cooper, Me.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held February 10, 2024 at Columbia Christian Fellowship, 1290 A Prospect Rd, Columbia, Pa 17512 with Paster Hub Smith officiating. The family will be receiving guests at 10:00 am for a time of fellowship and 11:00 am for a service to follow. Charles Eugene “CC” Sanders, 70 of Marietta, PA passed away at his home on January 14, 2024, with his wife Cathy by his side, a loving position she has had as his companion for 45 years. Charles was born in Norton, VA, the older of two sons to the late Harold Sanders and Willie L. Embry.  Charles also was deeply loved by his stepfather, the late William “Bill” Jankans.  Charles leaves to cherish his memory a son, Nestor Delgado, Jr. (Elma) of Pasadena, TX, a daughter, Maria Delgado McEvoy (Brian) of Manheim, PA, three sisters Deloris Hawkins (Nathan), Lancaster, PA, Linda White (Marvin), Pell City, AL, Betty Jean Cole, Pell City, AL, a brother Billy Sanders (Alice), Lancaster, and a host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

His childhood education took place in Big Stone Gap, VA and Pell City, AL.  The family relocated to the Marietta area in 1969 where Charles graduated from Donegal High School in 1972.  He received a basketball scholarship to Millersville University and he received a degree in Sociology in 1979.  In his professional career, Charles served with passion as Director, Alternative Rehabilitation Communities, Inc. in Dover (York) County and as an Instructor for the Drug & Alcohol Referral Program, York Hospital. 

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 297 S. 5th Street, Columbia, PA, Reverend Adrian Boxley officiating. Harry E. Davis, 78, of Lancaster passed away on January 10, 2024. He was born in Mifflintown town to the late Harry, Jr. and Gertrude Davis and lived most of his life in this area.

Harry was a graduate of McCaskey High School with the Class of 1963 and proudly served in the United States Navy as a store keeper and chaplains assistant. Following his service, he worked with the family car business, Davis and Son’s, and also as a salesman with Sears. Most recently, Harry was a retail manager with That Fish Place until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and Philadelphia Eagles Football. Harry adored his family and will be missed for his endearing sense of humor.

Harry leaves behind his wife of sixteen years, whom he loved with all his heart as she also loved him, Stacy Davis of Lancaster; four sons, Mark, husband of Tina Kline of Lancaster, Chris, husband of Sabrina Davis of Holtwood, Nathan Snellbaker, companion of Heather Weaver of Hershey, Andrew Snellbaker, companion of Becky Wiseman of Wrightsville; two grandchildren, Ty and Ryan; two great grandchildren, Nilah and Nash; his best friend Dennis, husband of Terri Rhoads of Willow Street; many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Robert, Lenore, Joanne, and Anna.

John W. Kuhns, 68, of Columbia, passed away after an 18-month battle with metastatic kidney cancer at UMPC Lititz on January 9, 2024. He was the husband of Gina (Shenberger) Kuhns, they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 12, 2024. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Chester J. and Rita C. (Whitcomb) Kuhns and was baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he received his Eagle Scout award.

A graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1973, John was employed as a machinist and had worked for KD Tools, Caterpillar, GAM Mfg. and retired from Machined Products, Inc., Lancaster after 35+ years of service.

John had a true strength behind his quiet ways. A skilled handyman, he could fix anything. He loved building car models and rockets. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping and spending time at Ocean City, NJ and travels to Maine. In addition, he was a lifetime member of the Columbia Fish and Game.

Dad and Pop-Pop was so very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved them with his whole heart. They will miss him dearly.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his daughters, Angela M. Gochnauer (Adam), East Petersburg; Erin R. Kuhns, New Cumberland; son, Jonathan A. Kuhns, Columbia. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Selina, Ashley, Stephanie, Ronan and Nathan and one great grandson, Harrison. He is also survived by his brother, Edward M. Kuhns, Hamlet, IN, sister-in-law, Barbara A. Kuhns, Columbia, his uncle John E. Kuhns, New Providence and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert B. Kuhns, sister-in-law Linda Kuhns and uncles Vincent and Alfred Kuhns.

Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512 on SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel C. Mitzel, officiating. Private interment will follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Elizabeth J. Jones, 79, of Columbia passed away on January 13, 2024. She was born in Columbia to the late Albert and Lorraine Grassel and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Elizabeth was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1962. She was an assistant supervisor with the former Columbia Kmart until her retirement. Elizabeth loved her Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies and enjoyed fun visits to the casinos with her friends. She adored her family and treasured spending time with them, especially her grandchildren.

Elizabeth leaves behind her children, Todd, husband of Paula Jones of Mount Joy, Holly Jones, companion of Susan Steinberg of Elizabethtown; three grandchildren, Shannon, Allyson, and Tyler; five great grandchildren, Adelyn, Amelia, Joey, Jaylah, and Zayne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Ed Askey and brother, Robert Askey.
